-- Port of Oakland Donates the Airport's Gently-Used Chairs to Local Nonprofits --
The Port of Oakland, Turner Construction and United Rentals have joined together to deliver gently-used chairs, previously used in Oakland International Airport's (OAK) terminals, to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland and other local nonprofits.
OAK completed a $300 million Terminal Improvement Program in spring 2008. The program included the replacement of some 6,000 chairs with contemporary seating which complements the new and renovated areas in Terminal 2, and the improvements that are currently underway in Terminal 1.
Today, employees of Turner Construction, the Port's construction management partner, delivered 120 chairs to their new home at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland where they will be used in recreation rooms where children hang-out, play games and enjoy meals.
The Port of Oakland and Turner Construction collaborated on this innovative approach to recycling and re-use. Rather than discarding thousands of chairs that are in good condition, they are seeking new homes with local nonprofits. The seats are joined together and come in sections of 3-, 4- or 5-chairs.
