Oakland International Airport (OAK) is located directly across the bay from San Francisco. OAK has state of the art FIS facilities (customs, immigration, and agricultural) on-site, as well as an in-transit area, a bag claim carrousel, counters and equipment that can process approximately 500 persons per hour. It lacks only the crowds at SFO.
OAK is the preferred airport for the majority of the Bay Area population. One of the reasons is better on-time service. OAK's tenant carriers are leaders in on-time performance. This can be credited not only to their efficient operation, but to the lack of congestion on our runways and in our terminals and the lack of fog near the airport.
During recent peak travel periods, 81 percent of OAK's flights were on time, versus 53.2 percent at SFO.
In addition, Oakland is the only Bay Area airport directly linked to the high-speed Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) System via the AirBART shuttle. BART serves most of the major Bay Area cities, but does not currently extend to SFO or San Jose International Airport (SJC).
Oakland also has scheduled service and a host of door-to-door carriers covering the entire San Francisco Bay Area.
Oakland International is home to five international carriers on a full-time or seasonal basis (CityBird, Corsair/New Frontier, Martinair Holland, Taesa, and Mexicana Airlines). These carriers provide nonstop service to the major European gateways of Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris; the Pacific port of Papeete, Tahiti; and several destinations in Mexico, including Mexico City.
OAK offers an executive lounge for the comfort and convenience of our tenant's first class and business travelers. The basic service price is $9 per day per passenger, and other membership terms are negotiable. Additional services will soon include complete duty-free shopping and expanded currency exchange.
The San Francisco and Oakland Airports are ranked 21st and 23rd in the world for landed weights by Airports Council International. FedEx operates a 13-acre, 191,000-square-foot, regional sort facility at Oakland employing 1,800 people. Every 24 hours, the facility processes about 14.7 percent of FedEx's system-wide payload.
An 11,000-square-foot International Customs Clearance Center, adjacent to the sort facility, processes more than 100,000 pounds of Pacific Rim freight nightly. Oakland's 67,000-square-foot air cargo facility handles the operations of all tenant carriers as well as Evergreen, United Parcel Service, and the U.S. Postal Service. OAK's North Field houses the operations of Airborne, Emery Worldwide and Ameriflight. OAK is a 24-hour facility with no curfew or noise restrictions.
OAK's nearest neighbors include not only the largest, but the fastest-growing population centers in the entire Bay Area. The trade service areas of SFO and OAK are almost identical, but OAK has substantially better proximity to the greater population. In contrast, the San Jose International Airport is 30 miles or more from these population centers.
